Chapter 47
b. Star-Spangled Banner The National Song of the United States Composed by Francis Scott Key on the night of September 13, 1814. The cartel ship Minden was anchored in sight of Fort McHenry, and from her deck Key saw, during the night of 13 September 1814, the bombardment of that fortress.
It was during the excitement of this attack and while pacing the deck of the Minden with intense anxiety between midnight and dawn that Key composed the song. It was first written on the back of a letter and after his return to Baltimore copied out in full. Harper's Book of Facts.
